September 29

We had a great morning.  We continue to work on building our stamina during Daily 5.  We have added writing to our job choices and within a week or so we will add the final job of Word Work.  Last year's kids especially like word work as it often involves games.

During writer's workshop today we continued to work on using sentence starters.  Please remember to post your ideas on the blog so I can add them to our list.

This morning we also worked on a visual journal page with Mr. Soulliere's class.  We decorated the page with all the things we know about addition.

After lunch we did calendar activities.  Do you know how many days we have been at school so far?  This is question we keep track of using base 10 blocks on the smartboard.

After this we went to One World Drumming.  It was a surpasses to Mrs. Sloane so we had to move fast.  It was so much fun!

Today in gym the kids said they had a lot of great exercise.  Sounds like they were moving a lot as I seen many red faces when I went to pick them up.

At the end of the day we talked about how to protect our senses.  We watched a quick video and then we worked in our visual journals.  We will finish this activity tomorrow.

Just a reminder that Friday is our Terry Fox run at 10:30.  Please be dressed for the weather and do not forget your water bottle.

Please post your answers to the question of the day: What does the term Friendly Facts mean in math?  Do you know your friendly facts?  Can you practice them with a family member?

Have a wonderful evening.

September 28

Today we talked about he lunar eclipse that happened yesterday evening.  We also watched a short time lapse video of the lunar eclipse.

This morning we talked about our wonderful weekends.  It sure sounds like we were all quite busy.  Glad to see so many of you made it out to the Fall Fair.  Fingers crossed that someone from our classroom wins the new car.

This morning during Writer's Workshop we learned to use Sentence Starters.  Here is a list of the ones that we have used so far:  Suddenly right before my eyes....., Looking closely I noticed......, I was surprised to see......, I stared at. If you can think of any more awesome sentence starters please post on the blog and we will add them to our list.

We had music this morning!

After lunch we worked on calendar activities and then we had math.  We reviewed some old math games and then we learned about subtraction.  Our goal is to learn to connect addition and subtraction.  We played a fun mystery subtraction game.  Please have your child talk to you about this game as it can easily be played at home.

After math we went to gym and we learned 3 new exercises: cross jacks, plank jacks and trunk twists.  Please have your child demonstrate these 3 exercises.

At the end of the day we played senses bingo.  I read a story to the class and each time they heard a description that used one of their senses they had to cover it up on their bingo card.

Question of the day?  Please post your answers on the blog.

What is the answer to a subtraction question called?

Happy first day of Fall.  Do you know what time Fall arrived?  Post your answers on the blog.

We continue to work on our Daily 5 jobs.  We now have 3 jobs to choose from and tomorrow I will introduce writing as a choice.

We have a Mount Royal University volunteer, Ms. Dawes, who will be in our classroom every Wednesday morning. She will be working with individual students and small groups.

This morning during writing, we finished our Peace writing project before we headed off to music.

Today was FUN LUNCH!!!

After lunch we read a story about the first day of fall and then we worked on calendar activities.

After this we worked on math.  The grade ones continue to use the double ten frames to represent addition and the grade twos are working on representing double digit numbers in their math journals.  Any extra practice at home with these skills would be greatly appreciated.  Your child will be able to show you what we are doing at school.  Ten frames can be printed off of google images.

After math we had dance and then we played a senses games.  It is your child's job to play this game with their family over the next week or so.

At the end of the day we talked about Terry Fox and came up with some What if questions.

Also, student demographic and a Terry Fox fundraising sheet  have been sent home.

Question of the day?  Please post answers.
Do you think it is easier to hear with one or two ears?  Why do you think that?

We are having some issues in the classroom with our water bottles.  We have a spill every half hour or so.  If possible, please please send your child to school with a leak proof water bottle.

Have a wonderful evening!

September 21

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  We did not get a chance to talk about our weekends as we were working with our Grade 3/4 buddies this morning.  To celebrate International Peace Day we read a book called What does Peace Look Like.  Then as a group we brainstormed all of our ideas about what peace is using our 5 senses.  Then we worked with our buddies and started writing our own piece of writing about peace.  At 10:30 we went outside with our pinwheels and sang some songs.

This morning we also had one round of Daily 5.  This all we had time for in the morning.  It was busy.

As a result of our Pinwheel Assembly we did not have music.

After lunch we worked on Calendar activities.  We have also started to talk about patterning and using actions to make different patterns.

Mr. Southworth came to our class to read us a book called What If.  Please ask your child what is the one thing they said about What If.... please post your answers on the blog.  An example would be What if everyone in the world had enough food?

During math the grade ones are working on adding 2 numbers together using 10 frames.  They are to make the first number on the top ten frame, the second number on the bottom ten frame and then move the bottom number up to the top.  This helps create the concept of putting 2 groups together.

The grade 2s are working on representing double digit numbers using base 10 blocks.

At the end of the day we played a senses game caller It Looks Like.... Please ask your child about this game.  After this game we did a guided drawing activity in our visual journals.  We drew an eye.

We had a fire drill around 9:10 this morning.  We got out quickly and did a great job even though we were in Miss Handelsman's classroom.

We have a Terry Fox Assembly tomorrow at 2:20.  We will have our run on October 2.

Milk forms due on Wednesday the 23rd.

Have a wonderful evening.

Thursday 17 September 2015

September 17

Tomorrow during Daily 5 I am going to introduce another job:  Listening to Reading.  The kids will now have 3 jobs to choose from.  I have a chart that keeps track of what everyone is doing to ensure no one is continually doing the same job over and over.

I worked with a group of grade ones today.  I introduced the reading strategy "look for the parts you know".  We also talked about /ing/.

On Thursday mornings we will be having music with Mrs. Jones.  We usually have music on Mondays and Wednesdays with Mrs. McBride but now we have it on Thursdays too.  This is awesome.

In math we are moving on to addition.  Grade ones will be working on addition to 18 and the grade twos to 100.  I teach math in a spiraling format which means I am constantly re-visiting the same math outcomes throughout the year.  I do not just teach addition and subtraction at the beginning of the year and then never again.  We re-visit these skills on many occasions throughout the year.

Monday is Pinwheels for Peace Day.  We started creating our pinwheels with our grade 3/4 buddies.

Today in gym we played with an omnikin ball.  Please ask your child what this is.

Running Club started today.  Sounds like it was a lot of hard work.  Way to go team.  See you all tomorrow.  Friday is a half day!

p.s.  Please see previous post about the Fall Fair coming up :)

Wednesday 16 September 2015

Today we continued practicing how to Read to Someone.  We had 2 rounds of Daily 5 where everyone got to choose their job.  We did amazing.

Grade one reading strategies include:  looking at the pictures for clues, look at the beginning sound and point to each word as you read it.  Grade 2's are working on comprehension strategies beginning with making predictions about a book.

Here is the story we wrote during Writer's Workshop.  We started with the first two sentences and then used our senses to add more details.

I love going to the beach.  It is hot.  I see people swimming.  I hear the waves crashing against the sand. Crash! This is my favorite place on earth!  I smell the seaweed laying on the sand and it smells sour just like rotten milk.  I taste the wind as the breeze lands on my tongue.  I feel the sand blowing onto my toes as I walk into the water.  I am happy!

Today we also talked about the letter w in handwriting without tears.  We are working on making skinnier w's and not ones that spread across the page.

In math we also practiced our Skip Counting Stomp Game. Tomorrow we will be moving on to learn another game.

At the end of the day we celebrated Rosh Hashanah with Ms. Handelsman.  We learned about this holiday and everyone got to taste apples dipped in honey.  This tasted so good.  Please ask your child what Rosh Hashanah is.

We will most likely being having a practice fire drill on Monday. I have spoken with the class about expecations for this event and which doors we must exit through.

Book orders arrived today and have been sent home.

I think there may have been a mix up with the scholastic book orders at the end of the day. If you did not get your books or if you got books that are not yours can you pleas email me.  Thank you.

Have a wonderful evening!

Tuesday 15 September 2015

September 15

Another wonderful day.

This morning we learned about our second Daily 5 job called Read to Someone.    Together we made a list of expectations which include:  2 people together, sit elbow to elbow and knee to knee, quiet voices, eyes on book, stay in one spot, choose a good learning spot and choose enough books.  We did amazing.  We will continue to practice tomorrow .

Today during Writer's Workshop we practiced adding details to a story using our 5 senses.  We talked about what is the job of a writer: to catch a reader's attention and help create a picture in the reader's mind.  We learned that we do this by adding details.

During our printing practice we worked on the letter t.  We talked about how letters always start at the top and move down just like rain falling from the sky.

After lunch we continued on with calendar activities.  During Math we learned a game called Skip Count Stomp.  This game helps us with our skip counting by 5s and 10s.  The tricky thing about this game is that we do not always start at 5 or 10.  We will continue to practice this skill.

We had gym today and played a super fun game of tag.

At the end of the day we created a wonderful senses page on touch.  I have attached a picture.

Milk forms went home yesterday.

Have a wonderful evening!

P.S. I just realized that I accidentally deleted yesterday's post.  Oops I hope everyone had a change to read it.

Friday 11 September 2015

Happy Friday Families.  We had a great day.  This morning we read a very funny story about A Very Cranky Bear who did not want to get out of bed. Some of the kids said they felt like this this morning as well.

After this we had quiet reading and I worked with a group of grade 2's for guided reading.  We are at the very beginning stages of literature circles.  Today we talked about writing down our questions as we are reading.  We also talked about what a morale/value is.

Today during Writer's Workshop many kids chose to write a story on a topic that was listed on our "We are Experts" poster.  Please ask your child what they chose to write about today.  Many of the grade ones are drawing a picture about something they are an expert on and then writing a sentence starting with "This is.....".

During math today the grade ones worked on representing numbers to 10 on the 10 frames.  We talked about a few double digit numbers including 11, 12 and 13.  The challenge was to figure out how to represent each double digit number using 2 ten frames.  The grade 2's worked on a game that helped them identify double digit numbers up to 100.  Please ask your child how to play this game.

After math we finished up our senses page in our visual journal and then it was time to go home.  What a quick morning.

Wednesday 9 September 2015

Another wonderful day in Room 73.  We started our day off with a story and then went straight into quiet reading.  I met with another group of grade ones for guided reading.  I hope to have met with all the grade ones by the end of tomorrow and start with the grade twos on Friday.

During Writer's Workshop we wrote about a memory.  I showed the kids a picture of my daughter and me on a gondola in Vancouver.  I wrote about all the things the picture reminded me of and I ended my story with how I felt.

We are working on a printing program called Printing without Tears.  We have talked about c, s and today I introduced o.  We will be working on this program over the next few months.

We had Music with Mrs. McBride this morning.

After lunch we read a story about the leaves changing colour and then we did calendar activities.

During Math the kids worked on a math challenge in their journals.  The kids had to figure out a skip counting pattern that I had created.  For example for grade one they had to fill in the blanks of the following pattern: 1,2 ___4,____,___7,____9____ and then 2, 4, _____,8, ____, ____.   The grade twos had this pattern 12, 14, ____, _____, 20, 22 ______, 26, 28 ______ and then ______ 80, 81, ____, _____, ____, 85, 86, 87, _____, 89, _____.  Everyone loved the challenge.

This afternoon we had dance.  So nice to see Ms. Janelle again.

At the end of the day we worked in our visual journals on a senses page.  We will finish up tomorrow by adding the senses and which body part they are associated with.

Have a wonderful evening!

Tuesday 8 September 2015

Happy Tuesday.  We started our day talking about our wonderful weekends.  I love hearing everything the kids do during their free time.  After this we had quiet reading.  We read for 14 minutes and during this time I was able to complete one guided reading lesson with a group of grade ones.  Please ask your child if they met with me during guided reading and the strategies we talked about (look at the pictures, point to each word as you say it and look at the beginning sound).

After quiet reading we moved on to writer's workshop.  We talked about writing  a story from a memory.  I am encouraging the kids to bring a picture to school that they can keep in their writing journal to refer to.

We also practiced turning a magic c into the letter s.  Any extra practice at home would be greatly appreciated.

After lunch we read a story about filling people's buckets and then we did calendar activities.  After this we finished up our number books and glued them in our math journals.  We also learned how to play go fish with the power of 10 cards.

In gym today we learned about playground safety.

We began talking about our 5 senses this afternoon and tomorrow we will start a new visual journal page.

Have a wonderful evening!

Friday 4 September 2015

This morning we listened to  a great story about Chester and a Bully.  What a great ending to this story.  We talked about asking others to play and including everyone.  We also had 10 minutes of quiet reading.  Next week we will be reading for 12 minutes.  I know we can do it.

After this we went to gym and Mrs. Mckechnie led us through some awesome "Spark" activities and then we had time to play with the balls and hoops.

When we came back from gym we worked on our draw and label writing projects.  Thank you to Reid, Cameron and Eden who shared their stories with us.

We also worked on calendar activities and started a new math book which will help us represent numbers in a way that is organized and easy to read.

Have a great long weekend.  Just a reminder there is no school on Monday.

Question of the day:  What was your favourite part of this week at school?  Please post your answer in the comments on our blog.

Thursday 3 September 2015

September 3

Good evening families.  We had a great day today.  We started our day off with a couple of stories from our new Assistant Principal Ms. Tuli.  The kids loved this.  After our stories we started Writer's Workshop.  We continue to work on our draw and label stories.

After snack we had quiet reading time.  I am so impressed with how well the kids can read and stay quietly in one spot.  We are working on our stamina and are now able to read for 10 minutes.  This is impressive.

Today we also started our printing program.  We learned about the magic letter c and we also practiced printing it in our scribblers.

At 10:00 this morning we had a welcome back treat from parent council.  They gave each child a muffin and cheese stick.  We ate outside on the compound as it was still so nice at this time.

After lunch we began working in our visual journals.  We created an all about me page.

This afternoon we also had gym outside with Mr.McDougall.  He will be teaching us gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This afternoon we also had a Kick off Assembly for our Entertainment Book Fundraiser.  Your child should have an entertainment book in their backpack.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is a half day and all students will be dismissed at 12:00.

Have a wonderful evening.

Wednesday 2 September 2015

September 2

Another great day with the amazing learners of Team 73.  This morning we read a book that included silly poems about school.  After this we talked about the classroom expectations for quiet reading.  We talked about 3 different ways to read a book (the words, the pictures and a re-tell) and we made a list of what the classroom should look like and sound like during quiet reading.

After quiet reading we had Writer's Workshop.  We learned about drawing a picture, labelling and then writing a sentence.  We also talked about how to spell words when we don't yet know how.  We pretend words are like rubber bands, say the word slowly, stretching it out and writing down the sounds we hear.

After snack we worked on our calendar activities and headed off to music.

After lunch we continued working on our subitizing skills.  We also talked about 10 frames and did some subitizing with them.  After this we played subitizing bingo in partners.  We also got our new math journals and did a math about me page.  Each child chose a number that they liked and thought of all the different ways they could represent that number (pictures, tally, ten frames etc).

At the end of the day we had gym outside as we will tomorrow.

Many papers went home today.  I have also sent home September's book order. Scholastic has a new system for parents that allows you to pay online.  I have set this up so hopefully it works.  Let me know if you have any troubles.  Once you pay online you will still need to send in the order forms to me.  Book orders are due on Monday September 7.

Have a wonderful evening.

Tuesday 1 September 2015

First day of school

Today was an absolutely amazing day at Cranston School in room73.  We had so much fun.  Here is what our day looked like.  We arrived in the classroom, hung up our belongings and listened to a story called If You Take A Mouse To School.  Thank goodness no one had a mouse in their backpack.

After this story we went on a tour of the school.  We learned where the nearest bathroom and water fountains are located.  Please send a labelled water bottle to school each day with your child.  After our tour everyone had the opportunity to introduce themselves and talk about the best thing that happened this summer.

This morning we did a secret message art activity.  Please ask your child what we did.

We had lunch from 11:15-12:05.  All grade 1/2s eat from 11:15 to 11:40 and then head outside to play until 12:05.  At 12:05 they line up and head inside for a great afternoon of learning.  We eat lunch in Room 72.

After lunch we read a story called Get out of Bed by Robert Munch.  The kids loved this!  After our story we worked on some calendar activities which included learning about the days of the week, months of the year, using a thermometer, and counting by 2s, 5s and 10s.  After calendar we did some math activities.  The cool math word we talked about is Subitize.  Please ask your child to see if they remember what this word means.

After math we had snack and then worked with our buddies around a book called If Kids Ruled the World.  We created illustrations about what we thought we would be the best thing if kids ruled the world.  At the end of the day we had a whole school assembly.

We had a wonderful day and I noticed the kids were really tired at the end of the day.  This is to be expected.  Just a reminder to please send 2 snacks each day and a water bottle labelled with your child's name.

Also just wanted to let you know that we will be having music on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:30 and Gym Monday - Thursday at 1:40.

I look forward to another great day tomorrow.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.  klsloane@cbe.ab.ca

Have a wonderful evening!
